lived in a very normal, classical universe
where everything made sense, and
nothing behaved strangely. Then along
came quantum theory.
Suddenly, stuff didn't always behave as
any rational person would expect. At
the fundamental level of atoms and
particles, things could be in two places
at once. They could even move in two
different directions at once. And it
seemed they could also be entangled -
engaged in a quantum version of
telepathy in which they are somehow
able to sense and affect each other
instantaneously from a distance.
Adjusting to this new universe was a tall
order. Some physicists constructed
elaborate philosophies to deal with the
implications. Albert Einstein, on the
other hand, famously rejected entangle-
ment as "spooky". He was convinced
that quantum entanglement couldn't be
real because the implications would run
too deep: any effort to produce a
unified theory, one that tied quantum
mechanics together with relativity and
other physical theories, would need to
reconcile the weirdness of entanglement
with relativity's rather more practical
grasp of time and space. That just
seemed altogether too hard.
Not that he ever gave up on a theory of
everything. Einstein spent the latter
part of his life trying to construct a
unified universe, without success. He
also continued to wrestle with quantum
spookiness on his own. To most
physicists, quantum theory was useful if
you wanted to design a laser or
transistor, but it didn't do to think
about it too deeply.
That attitude prevailed even among
those who wanted to understand the
intimate workings of the universe. So
the "foundations" of quantum theory -
the assumptions behind how it
describes particles, fields and reality
itself - has taken a back seat in the
quest for a unified theory. "Einstein's
strong belief that the foundational
issues in quantum mechanics are a
necessary part of solving the problem of
unification got suppressed and lost,"
says Lee Smolin of the Perimeter
Institute in Waterloo, Canada.
But what was lost has now been found
again.

An excellent novel
with deep philosophy
In Richard Bach's international bestseller
"Jonathan Livingston Seagull" (1970. Reprint.
New York: Avon, 1973) we find the seagull
Jonathan who always wants to fly higher and
better. The Elder tries to teach him that in
order to be everywhere and everywhen at once
he first needs to understand the mechanisms
of flying. If these mechanisms are not fully
understood and integrated, real flying is
impossible.
As Chiang (the Elder) gently explains : "You will
begin to touch heaven, Jonathan, in the
moment that you touch perfect speed. And
that isn't flying a thousand miles an hour, or a
million, or flying at the speed of light. Because
any number is a limit, and perfection doesn't
have limits. Perfect speed, my son, is being
there."
"You can go to any place and to any time that
you wish to go," the elder said. "I have gone
everywhere and everywhen I can think of."
He looked across the sea. "It's strange. The
gulls who scorn perfection for the sake of travel
go nowhere, slowly. Those who put aside travel
for the sake of perfection go anywhere,
instantly. ... Remember, Jonathan, heaven isn't
a place or a time, because place and time are so
meaningless."
"Heaven is . . . to fly as fast as thought, to
anywhere that is," he said, "you must begin by
knowing that you have already arrived . . ."
The trick, according to Chiang, was for
Jonathan to stop seeing himself as trapped
inside a limited body that had a forty-two-inch
wingspan and performance that could be
plotted on a chart. The trick was to know that
his true nature lived, as perfect as an unwritten
number, everywhere at once across space and
time. . . .
Then one day Jonathan, standing on the shore,
closing his eyes, all in a flash knew what Chiang
had been telling him.
"Why, that's true, I am a perfect, unlimited gull!
. . . "
Jonathan opened his eyes. He stood alone with
the Elder on a totally different seashore ---
trees down to the water's edge, twin yellow
suns turning overhead. . . . "IT WORKS!"
"Well of course it works, Jon," said Chiang, "it
always works, when you know what you are
doing. Now about your control . . ."
"We can start working with time if you wish,"
Chiang said, "till you can fly the past and the
future. And then you will be ready to begin the
most difficult, the most powerful, the most fun
of all. You will be ready to begin to fly up and
know the meaning of kindness and of love."
But then the day came that Chiang vanished.
He had been talking quietly with them all,
exhorting them never to stop their learning
and their practicing and their striving to
understand more of the perfect invisible
principle of all life. Then, as he spoke, his
feathers went brighter and brighter and at last
turned so brilliant that no gull could look upon
him.
"Jonathan," he said, and these were the last
words that he spoke, "keep working on love."
When they could see again, Chiang was gone.

Robot hand controlled by
thought alone
A robotic hand controlled by the power
of thought alone has been demonstrated
by researchers in Japan. The robotic
hand mimics the movements of a
person's real hand, based on real-time
functional magnetic resonance imaging
(fMRI) of their brain activity. It marks
another landmark in the advance
towards prosthetics and computers that
can be operating by thought alone.
The system was developed by Yukiyasu
Kamitani and colleagues from the ATR
Computational Neuroscience Laborato-
ries in Kyoto, and researchers from the
Honda Research Institute in Saitama.
Subjects lay inside an MRI scanner and
were asked to make " rock, paper,
scissor" shapes with their right hand. As
they did this, the MRI scanner recorded
brain activity during the formation of
each shape and fed this data to a
connected computer. After a short
training period, the computer was able
to recognise the brain activity associated
with each shape and command the
robotic appendage do the same.
An fMRI machine probes activity within
the brain by monitoring blood flow to
different regions. It uses a powerful
magnetic field combined with radio-
frequency pulses to probe the magnetic
state of hydrogen atoms in water mole-
cules within body tissue. An alternative
and more portable method is to
measure electrical activity inside the
brain using electrodes either implanted
in brain tissue or attached to the scalp.
US researchers have previously used
brain implants to allow monkeys to
remotely operate robotic arms.
Electrodes attached to a person's skull
can also be used to control the move-
ment of a cursor across a computer
screen. Klaus-Robert Mueller at the
Fraunhofer Institute in Berlin, Germany,
has developed such a system. He says
the fMRI technique is cumbersome and
expensive but could help scientists
better understand how the brain works
because it provides higher resolution.

A Ladder to Heaven
Jacob's Ladder refers to a ladder to heaven described in the
Book of Genesis (28:11-19) which the biblical patriarch Jacob
envisioned during his flight from his brother Esau:
Jacob left Beersheba, and went toward Haran. And he came to
the place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set.
Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head
and lay down in that place to sleep. And he dreamed that there
was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to
heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and
descending on it!
And behold, the LORD stood above it and said, "I am the LORD,
the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land
on which you lie I will give to you and to your descendants; and
your descendants shall be like the dust of the earth, and you
shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the
north and to the south; and by you and your descendants shall
all the families of the earth bless themselves. Behold, I am with
you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back
to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done that of
which I have spoken to you."
Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, "Surely the LORD is
in this place; and I did not know it." And he was afraid, and
said, "This is none other than the house of God, and this is the
gate of heaven."
